Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that damages a person’s memory, thinking skills, and ability to do basic tasks. Dementia is a term for thinking and functioning impairments that disrupt a person’s daily living. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, making up 60-80% of cases. Right now, there is no way to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease.
Older age is a risk factor, but Alzheimer's disease and dementia are not a normal part of life. People do not usually lose memory, thinking, or daily life skills when they age.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is a research study learning about aging, brain health, and Alzheimer’s disease. Click here to learn more about the ADNI study.
